PREVENTATIVE CARE
While an apple a day may not actually keep the doctor away, regular dental visits can reduce the need for a dentist. The basis of dental health, and overall health, is preventative care. Simply put, this means getting care before you have a problem develop. To achieve this, the American Dental Association recommends biyearly exams and cleanings with diagnostic radiographs once a year. At these appointments your hygienist will work to remove all accumulated plaque and tartar build-up to prevent progression of disease and inflammation. Meanwhile we will evaluate your mouth not only for issues such as cavities, gum disease and tooth fractures, but also for your risk for such problems with the hopes of advising lifestyle changes to prevent progression. It is these regular visits that help maintain a healthy mouth and allows intervention as early as possible resulting in less invasive, and less expensive, dental treatment.
GENERAL DENTISTRY
General Dentistry focuses on the health and well-being of the entire oral cavity. There are three main areas evaluated by general dentists: 1- the supporting structure of the teeth; 2- the teeth themselves; and 3- the bite.
Often times a malady or infection in any of these areas can lead to the development of problems in the others causing significant damage and pain. The goal of any general dentist is to identify these problems and treat them before they can progress. Every patient and mouth is different and as such, each case must be evaluated independently with a specifically tailored treatment plan.
Like your family physician, general dentistry focuses on care for the whole family from children, to adults and even geriatrics. And in a similar manner, when cases or situations require a more advanced degree of knowledge treatment will be referred to a highly trained specialist for the best care possible.

REPLACEMENT OF MISSING TEETH
The loss of a tooth, or multiple teeth, can be the beginning of a painful and problematic cycle Not only are the emotional and aesthetic issues of concern, but a tooth space left empty can actually allow the neighboring teeth to shift and drift causing further cosmetic concerns, problems with your bite and problems with those teeth themselves.

ORAL MEDICINE
Oral medicine is the discipline of dentistry concerned with the oral health care of medically compromised patients. Many syndromes and diseases present with oral changes and that can be pathologic to your oral health. Often times, even the treatments or medications prescribed for conditions can cause these changes.
Physicians with a DMD (Doctor of Medical Dentistry) degree, such as Dr. Rogers and Dr. Powell, are trained with a heavy general medicine background making them highly knowledgeable of the implications of overall health on the mouth and vice versa.
At least twice a year we will complete a full oral examination including an oral cancer screening, during which all oral tissue will be evaluated to ensure there are no pathological changes. Similarly, bone seen on radiograph will be evaluated with each x-ray taken. If there are any abnormal findings, indicated medical treatment will be rendered and advised.

CARE FOR YOUR CHILDREN
Standards as set by the American Dental Association and American Academy of Pediatric Dentists recommends having your child evaluated by a dentist within 6 months of the eruption of their first tooth. Though treatment on these early visits is rare, studies show that intervention at these times can vastly alter the course of your child’s oral health. These visits provide us the opportunity to screen your child for eating, brushing and sucking habits that can negatively affect their oral health. It is our hope and goal that through identification and elimination of certain behaviors we can actually prevent the need for extensive dental care. Of equal importance is the opportunity for your child to become acquainted with the dentist, the office and the entire experience of a cleaning. Like anything else in life, experience and knowledge reduces fear, making visits later on in life much easier. We strive to make every visit, a happy visit.
When cavities and other problems do arise, however, we are prepared to treat them. Though many aspects of dental treatment is similar between children and adults, baby teeth do have significant anatomical differences from their adult counterparts. Our doctors are well - trained in these variations and prepared to deal with their specific dental needs.
